UJAMAA EXTRACTS FOR AUDITION

OPENING REMARK:
There is no country in the world today, which is not torn by civil war, yet whose basis of corporate existence is being subjected to persistent attacks, by an articulate section of its own politicians, journalists and other opinion leaders, as the Federal Republic of Nigeria. WHAT IS WRONG WITH NIGERIA?

1ST Speaker: I—–, say: Politicians are the problems of Nigeria, because they are miss-leaders. They not only mislead but also misinform the hapless citizens.
•Politicians can lie, so much that even Steve Wonder could look into their eyes and know they are lying. A candidate for senatorial election whose primary job description is to make law, would say, if you vote for me, I will fix all your roads, build hospitals, schools and bridges. If he does that, what will the executives do? A presidential candidate will promise 24/7 power supply within one year in office; while the combined installed capacity of all available power generating plants is about 20% of power demand. Does he have a magic wand? Building and commissioning even the simplest of the power plants, say, small hydro plant takes more than two years. How many power plants will he build within one year to increase from 20% supply to 100% supply?
•They can steal, such that the exploits of Anenih and Sheena Rambo are kids play. They steal billions meant for infrastructural developments. They loot the national treasury, our common wealth and ship their loots overseas. — . (65secs = 1min 5secs)

2nd Speaker: I — say, Electorates are the problems of Nigeria, as they vote for stomach infrastructure, if at all they come out to vote. Some of the electorates are people who want to reap where they did not sow. How can you explain 2.5m registered voters and only about 400,000 come out to vote.
•The electorates are nonchalant. Most electorate see Election Day as another public holiday for them to travel and hold various social functions. People resident and registered to vote at cities travel to villages on the eve of Election Day. Those, who don’t travel, see the Election Day as rest day, staying indoors to bond with their families. So, in the end only few percentages of the registered voters, in most cases between 20% and 40% cast their votes.

5th Speaker: I — say: 1914 British amalgamation is the problem of Nigeria. How can you stitch over 250 nations with different languages and culture together? That is colonial misadventure.
•Nigeria is a mere geographical expression, in the words of some experts. The unholy matrimony of 1914, where the political architect, Sir Lord Lugard amalgamated two distinct territories with little or no regards to consent or consultation is the origin of mistrust that robbed Nigeria of stability. Lugard had some preconceived and erroneous ideas about how the territory was to be ruled. This undermined the basic objective of his administration. First, he did very little to bring the territory under a single central administration. The territory continued to be governed separately as the colony of Lagos, and the Northern and Southern Protectorates. From amalgamation in 1914 until 1946, there was no political or administrative interaction among the various peoples of Nigeria. The three colonies continued to be governed separately as if they were three countries. It was only in 1946, under the Richard’s Constitution, that a feeble attempt was made to bring representative units together at an assembly in Lagos.— (66secs = 1min 6secs)
